Learn what bodybuilding is all about,
reap its fitness benefits!

Arnold Schwarzenegger made bodybuilding a household name with the release of his 1973 movie “Pumping Iron”. And the first time I watched this movie, I was in awe at the type of results that can be achieved by lifting weights. From that moment on, I followed the sport of bodybuilding and read everything I found about the competitions.

But, I realized that this is really more than a sport – it is a mind, body, and soul endeavor, it’s almost a unique lifestyle. Keeping this big picture always in your mind will make your muscle building more efficient, more effective, and will help grow your body to new proportions. You’ll need to look at your new quest as a lifestyle change and know what you’re in for before you even start.

Supplements can be useful

When the talk begins to turn towards building a muscular body, it’s natural to talk about supplements. Most guys can benefit from taking supplements. As for what types of supplements you should use, there are basically four different ones that can help you in your workout program. These include:

  • Protein powders to help build lean muscle mass
  • Creatine combats fatigue, allowing you to workout longer and more effectively
  • Glutamine helps combat the stress you are putting your body under during an intense workout
  • Nitric Oxide increases the flow of muscle building agents to skeletal muscle

Watch your nutrition

A serious bodybuilding routine is also very much about your diet and nutritional choices. It requires a lot of energy. We get energy from calories that we consume. Our muscles also respond to other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fats and protein to bring growth hormones to the muscles we want to build.

A proper diet is very important in any bodybuilding program. Skip the three big meals a day, and instead, eat 5 or 6 smaller ones that are well-balanced and filled with protein and carbohydrates. The carbs will give you energy and the protein will contribute to your muscle building power.

Sleep on it!

Getting plenty of rest is a must. Your muscles grow when you’re sleeping. But your muscles also repair themselves at night from the damage you’ve done to them during the day. When you get the required amount of rest, you will be doing your muscles a real favor, when it comes to your body building goals.

Have a buddy system

A good training partner can provide motivation as well as tips and advice to help you maximize your training and concentrate on your goals. They can also push you beyond your comfort zone and make you work harder than you would on your own.

Keep it balanced

Want to get the best results from your workouts? Make sure you work all the major muscles of the back, legs, chest and arms. You will get a more balanced body and will decrease the chances of underdeveloping some areas of your body. And work them on different days.

Also, decrease the amount of rest between sets and the intensity will go up.

Log it!

A log or journal of what you’ve been doing will help track your progress and will give you motivation when you don’t feel like working out. If your muscle growth seems to be stuck, a look at your log will tell you if you have been doing the same routine for too long or if you need to take a break altogether and start fresh a week later.

We are not taking Schwarzenegger type body as our goal, but bodybuilding may help us get the type of fitness we need to enjoy life more.
